The idea of relocating the country’s capital city (IKN) was put forward by Joko Widodo on April 29, 2019, ahead of the presidential and vice-presidential election dispute hearing at the Constitutional Court (MK), or only 12 days after the presidential election voting on April 17, 2019.
An in-depth study of the official government documents on the IKN reveals an interesting fact about several national and local politicians who are strongly suspected of profiting from this megaproject idea. The beneficiaries include several national and local politicians and their families who own extractive industry concessions, ranging from coal mines, palm oil, timber, coal-fired power plants, giant-scale hydropower plants, and property entrepreneurs. More than that, it is strongly suspected that the plan to move the IKN will only be a way of ignoring the company’s sins against environmental destruction and expropriation of community land in East Kalimantan.
